The Tunisian delegation, led by Ms. Leila CHIKHAOUI-MAHDAOUI, Minister of the Environment, participated on Wednesday February 28, 2024, on the sidelines of the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA6), in the events of the day dedicated to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEA), which recorded the participation of delegations of State Parties and representatives of international organizations and institutions and civil society.

These events were dedicated to highlighting the problems posed by the triple global environmental crisis linked to climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution, particularly that due to plastic, as well as the role of AEM in providing a response. effective, rapid and efficient in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. During this day, ministerial dialogue sessions were devoted to the following themes: – Strengthening the interface between science and public policies for the effective implementation of multilateral environmental commitments. – Strengthening collaboration between the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) to improve their effective implementation on a national level. – The preparation, under the auspices of Canada, of the 4th meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC4) with a view to the development of a legally binding international instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, planned in Ottawa in April 2024.

On this occasion, the Minister contributed to the ministerial dialogues and met a number of ministers, representatives of the participating delegations and officials of the United Nations Conventions, namely Mr. Ibrahim THIAW, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on the fight against desertification, Mr. Rolph PAYET, Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions and Ms. Anita BREYER, German Federal Minister for the Environment, President of the 5th International Conference on Chemicals Management (Bonn , September 2023).
