More than 80% of the construction work on the seawater desalination plant in Sfax, launched in April 2022, has now been completed, and the water supply will soon be abundant, announces the Embassy of Japan in Tunisia. Financed by Japan to support Tunisia’s economic and social development, this plant aims to address water stress and will enable the National Water Exploitation and Distribution Company (Sonede) to enhance water supply capacity and quality. Takeshi Osuga, the Ambassador of Japan to Tunisia, conducted a field visit yesterday, on Thursday, February 1, 2024, to the project sites, accompanied by Sonede CEO Ahmed Soula, according to the embassy, which also announced that more than 80% of the construction work is now complete.
« This project, funded by Japan with an amount of approximately 36.7 billion Japanese Yen, equivalent to about 780 million Tunisian Dinars (today’s exchange rate), aims to produce 100,000 cubic meters of water per day and ensure a stable water supply to Sfax. It also contributes to the water demand in the north by saving water that comes from the north, » commented the embassy.
