The Secretary of State indicated that the rate of progress of the works of the Sousse desalination plant has reached approximately 70 percent and will be completed at the end of the current year, adding that these plants will contribute to the supply of 200 thousand cubic meters per day. This will support the water system in Sfax and the Sahel areas, and reduce pressure on the waters of the north and Greater Tunis.
In the same context, the chief of staff of the Minister of Agriculture, Abdel Raouf Al-Ajimi, stressed that the national strategy to combat climate change is based on the mobilization of surface resources, which will make it possible to guarantee the reserves of ‘potable water.
He highlighted work on many other areas, including desalination and seawater treatment to support drinking water efforts, in addition to treated used water to support water conservation efforts. irrigation.
He specified that there is a comprehensive plan to guarantee citizens’ drinking water needs during the summer, stressing that the situation remains very delicate.
Al-Ajimi pointed out that interventions have been made in recent weeks by pumping millions of cubic meters to support additional grain irrigation to ensure respectable durum wheat production after the drought.
