Women will now be able to sail higher in the maritime sector, through a significant contribution to peace and security in this sector. This is in any case the objective of the new Code of good practices presented yesterday in Yaoundé, during a ceremony attended by officials from the Ministry of Transport, as well as those from the Ministry of Defense in charge of maritime safety. The Code of Good Practice for Women in the Maritime Security Sector was designed as part of the project “Integrated Responses to Threats to Safety and Security in the Maritime Domain of the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa and Africa central”. It is implemented by the Koffi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center (KAIPTC), for the benefit of coastal countries in West and Central Africa with the support of the Danish government.

This document, we learned, constitutes a reference support for the promotion of the well-being and advancement of women, in accordance with Resolution 1325 of the Security Council of the United Nations. The aim of this tool is better involvement of women in activities related to peace and security in the maritime sector. From this perspective, compliance with the code allows practitioners to foster an environment conducive to participation, protection and prevention of gender-based violence. It is also about strengthening the empowerment of women within maritime communities.
