The Port of Shanghai maintained its top position among the world’s largest ports in 2022 with an impressive volume of 47.3 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).
This port, located in China, continues to dominate the global maritime sector thanks to its modern infrastructure and operational efficiency.
Singapore and Ningbo-Zhoushan Complete the Podium
In second place, the Port of Singapore handled 37.3 million TEUs, maintaining its status as a key player in Asian and global maritime trade.
Ningbo-Zhoushan, also in China, ranks third with 33.3 million TEUs, illustrating China’s dominance in global maritime transport.
Shenzhen and Qingdao: Continued Chinese Growth
The Chinese ports of Shenzhen and Qingdao rank fourth and fifth, respectively, with volumes of 30.04 and 25.7 million TEUs. These ports benefit from their strategic positions and continuous investments in port infrastructure.
Guangzhou, Busan, and Tianjin: Major Regional Players
The Port of Guangzhou in China is in sixth place with 24.6 million TEUs. Busan, in South Korea, follows with 22.1 million TEUs, confirming its role as a major hub in East Asia. Tianjin, also in China, is eighth with 21 million TEUs.
Hong Kong and Rotterdam: Gateways to the West
Despite recent economic challenges, Hong Kong remains an important player in Asia with 16.7 million TEUs, placing ninth. Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe, ranks tenth with 15 million TEUs, illustrating its capacity to handle a steady flow of goods between Europe and the rest of the world.
Development of Vadhavan Port in India
Meanwhile, India plans to build the Port of Vadhavan, which is set to become one of the largest ports in the world. This project is part of the North-South Transport Corridor, aimed at enhancing India’s logistical capabilities and increasing its share in international maritime trade.
