On Wednesday, July 3, 2024, MP Dhouha Selmi described the southern suburbs of Tunis as a disaster area, indicating that the region has been deliberately marginalized since the 1990s.

Speaking on IFM’s morning show, she emphasized that the environmental situation is continuously deteriorating. « We are facing an environmental crime, and there is no other term to describe this situation. The National Sanitation Utility (Onas) is responsible; its role is to clean up, but instead, it pollutes (…) there is a set of regulations that obligates industrialists, but they do not comply with it, » added the MP.

She specified that sea water pollution causes skin diseases and that correspondences sent to the relevant ministry have gone unanswered.
