Mehdi Aïssa, director of the marine program at the World Wildlife Fund in North Africa, said in Midi Show on Monday that marine ecosystems in Tunisia are among the best in the world in terms of biological diversity.

« Several species of fish and aquatic animals such as sea turtles inhabit our coasts, while they are threatened with extinction in other countries, » he said.

He stressed, however, that certain human activities, such as trawling, pollution, etc., constitute a threat to this diversity.

Mehdi Aïssa added that some Tunisian coasts are experiencing a real ecological disaster. « These beaches need urgent solutions including the reduction of polluting industrial activities in their surroundings, » he said.
