On Tuesday in Rabat, Morocco and the Democratic Republic of the Congo signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of environment and sustainable development.
The signing of this memorandum of understanding is part of the official working mission to Morocco conducted by Arlette Soudan-Nonault, Minister of Environment, Sustainable Development, and the Congo Basin, to review the progress of the operationalization of the Congo Basin Climate Commission (CCBC) and the Blue Fund of the Congo Basin (F2BC), the preparations for a donors’ roundtable, and the 4th Summit of the CCBC Heads of State and Government, as well as the CCBC’s participation in COP29.
Signed by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and Ms. Soudan-Nonault, who is also the Executive Secretary of the CCBC, this memorandum aims to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in areas of mutual interest, particularly environmental governance.
The memorandum also addresses environmental and strategic assessments, combating the effects of climate change, especially nationally determined contributions, resource management, biodiversity, and green and blue economies, liquid waste management, and integrated waste management.
During the occasion, Ms. Benali stated in a press release that this meeting marks an important step in the operationalization of the exchange of experiences and strategies between the two countries in the fields of environment and sustainable development. This includes climate finance to attract more funding to Africa, particularly to Morocco and Congo.
She further noted that the meeting also provided an opportunity to work on various waste recycling, blue and green economy projects, highlighting their importance for the sustainable development of both countries.
Ms. Benali also emphasized that partnerships between African countries facilitate the development of projects that enhance energy transition and development pathways.
For her part, Ms. Soudan-Nonault affirmed that this memorandum will further strengthen cooperation with Morocco in environmental and sustainable development fields, noting that it covers several areas of mutual interest, such as combating the effects of climate change, biodiversity, and green and blue economies.
This agreement represents the effective operationalization of the work of the Congo Basin Climate Commission and marks a significant milestone in our joint efforts to prepare for COP29, she noted.
The CCBC is one of three African climate commissions established at the 1st African Summit on Co-emergence, initiated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, as part of COP22 held in Marrakech.
