ANTANANARIVO, August 26 (Xinhua) — The Malagasy Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy has announced the imminent operationalization of a Fishery Development Zone (ZEP) in northern Madagascar.

This initiative aims to strengthen the fish farming sector, with an annual production target of 700,000 to one million fingerlings, according to statements made by the Minister in charge, Paubert Tsimanaoraty Mahatante, published on Sunday.

The zone, which benefits from 12,000 hectares of irrigated plains, holds significant potential for aquaculture development, he noted.

The ministry emphasizes that this ZEP not only aims to combat food insufficiency but also to increase the income of fish farmers. In this regard, the authorities aspire to elevate the fish farming industry to the same level as poultry farming, a key sector for the country’s economy.

The ministry also indicated that the construction work on the ZEP, which began in 2018 and was 85% complete as of last April, will now « accelerate. » End.
