Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet and the French President’s Special Envoy and Ambassador for the Poles and Maritime Issues, Olivier Poivre d’Arvor, co-chaired a roundtable on enhancing adaptation, financing, and resilience in response to the challenges posed by rising sea levels, on September 25 (local time) in New York.

The event, organized during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) addressing the existential threats posed by rising sea levels, attracted participation from leaders and representatives of UN member states, particularly small island states and countries heavily affected by climate change, as well as representatives from various organizations and international financial institutions.

The Vietnamese diplomat highlighted the devastating impact of Typhoon Yagi on Vietnam and the risks of rising sea levels in the Mekong Delta region, emphasizing that countries need to develop comprehensive and sustainable strategies with fundamental solutions, such as building appropriate infrastructure to protect coastal communities and creative solutions in response to emergencies.

Furthermore, he noted the importance of raising public awareness on this issue and improving the response capacity of communities, including developing strategies for diversifying livelihoods and sustainable farming and aquaculture methods.

Do Hung Viet called on countries and stakeholders to continue sharing measures to enhance the effectiveness of financial mobilization for addressing rising sea levels and climate change.
