At the current pace, the goal of preserving at least 30% of the planet by the end of the decade is out of reach. In recent years, progress in expanding protected area networks, as well as improving the quality and governance of these spaces, has been far too slow. According to the Protected Planet report, published on Monday, October 28, by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), efforts must be intensified: the area of protected lands needs to double, and marine areas must triple by 2030.

« It is essential that protected areas reach the 30% target, but it is equally important that they are effective and do not have a negative impact on the people living there, » emphasizes Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP. « This report shows that some progress has been made, but we are neither going far enough nor fast enough. »
