After a five-year break, the Ocean Festival is making its comeback in Seychelles. The event will open on Thursday, November 28, and conclude on Saturday, November 30, 2024. This year’s edition, titled « Protect Our Oceans, » is dedicated to the youth, aiming to raise awareness about the diversity, beauty, and fragility of this vital ecosystem.
The last Ocean Festival was held in 2019, but health and financial crises put the event on hold. However, the growing ecological urgency has brought the festival back, highlighting the need to safeguard the oceans for future generations.
Thanks to the Save Our Seas Foundation, established in Geneva in 2003 with a research center on Arros Island, the festival’s return has been made possible.
« It is important that we preserve it for our children, » emphasized Bernadette Willemin, Director General of Destination Marketing at Tourism Seychelles.
Exhibitions and Beach Cleanups
The festival will feature exhibitions at the National History Museum and Berjaya Beau-Vallon Resort, alongside a major beach cleanup initiative. Organizers are encouraging families to participate actively.
For those hesitant about underwater exploration, virtual reality kits will offer a chance to experience marine wonders.
Jeanette Larue, Director General for Public Education and Community Awareness at the Ministry of Environment, announced that snorkeling will be promoted as part of the event. Furthermore, snorkeling activities will be incorporated into the school curriculum starting next term, as reported by Seychelles News Agency.
