Tunisia will begin the first projects for the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives starting in 2030, announced Wael Chouchane, Secretary of State to the Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, in charge of Energy Transition, on Monday in Gabès. He specified that agreements had been signed with several international investors who have already started developing studies for their projects.
Opening the proceedings of an international forum on green hydrogen and its derivatives, organized by the Industrial and Technological Pole of Gabès, Chouchane indicated that the Gabès region will play a key role in the national green hydrogen strategy due to its proximity to renewable energy production sites and the importance of its commercial port, which will serve as a link between production centers and export hubs.
The production of green hydrogen and its derivatives will rely on renewable energy and water, primarily sourced from seawater desalination, he added.
The organization of this international forum is part of the implementation of the National Strategy for the Development of Green Hydrogen and its Derivatives in Tunisia by 2050, officially launched in May 2024. The forum saw the participation of academic experts, industry leaders, and professionals interested in green hydrogen production.
