The town of Gandon hosted the opening of Senegal’s first plastic waste recycling micro-factory, inaugurated on December 3. This innovative facility, which will be operational starting January 30, marks the beginning of an ambitious program aimed at establishing ten more micro-factories across the country.

Developed by the company Banco in partnership with the French Embassy in Senegal, this project is part of the « Sunu Plastic Odyssey » initiative. According to a press release, it is an innovative local project supported by the Plastic Odyssey association, with the goal of converting plastic waste into reusable resources, while training young people in recycling professions and fighting against environmental pollution.

The micro-factory, with a budget of 130 million CFA francs, will be able to process one ton of plastic waste per day, with a projected production capacity of 300 tons. During the inauguration, Christine Fage, the French Ambassador to Senegal, emphasized the importance of this initiative in the fight against plastic pollution, stressing the need for innovation to transform environmental challenges into economic opportunities.

The facility will generate 12 direct jobs and approximately 60 indirect jobs, thus contributing to the local economy.
