In a new report, IPBES, the « IPCC of biodiversity, » highlights the interdependencies between biodiversity, food, water, health, and climate change, criticizing siloed approaches.
A catastrophe never comes alone. The 2019 report from IPBES, the biodiversity equivalent of the IPCC, caused a stir: it reported that one million species are at risk of extinction, a « unprecedented » rate. In this new report, called « Nexus, » the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) focused on evaluating the « interlinkages between biodiversity, water, food, health, and climate change. »
« There are very complex links between these five elements, » explains Anne Larigauderie, executive secretary of IPBES, for whom the report « addresses the most critical questions the world must urgently address.
