Traité BBNJ, nouveau jalon dans le développement du droit international de la mer

On the afternoon of December 10, as part of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated with the Vietnam Society of International Law (VSIL) to organize a seminar on the International Treaty for the Protection of the High Seas and Marine Biodiversity (BBNJ).

The seminar brought together numerous ministries, organizations, agencies, foreign diplomatic missions to Vietnam, as well as many national and international speakers, academics, and researchers in the field of maritime and ocean law.

Charlotte Salpin, Senior Legal Advisor, Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, provided an overview of the BBNJ Treaty.

As a coastal state that always respects international law, including the Convention on the Law of the Sea, Vietnam has actively participated in the negotiation process aimed at developing the third implementing agreement of the Convention.

This seminar was part of the efforts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and VSIL to widely disseminate the Convention on the Law of the Sea in general and the BBNJ Treaty in particular to national ministries, agencies, and organizations, as well as international legal researchers in Vietnam, thereby clarifying the obligations of countries and the benefits provided by the support mechanisms of this Treaty, including technology transfer, capacity-building, and financial support. -VNA/VI
