The fishing and aquaculture sector is receiving increased support through recent initiatives led by the Government. In addition to training, equipment and material supplies are being provided to encourage the intensification of productive activities.
In Mahavatse II, Toliara, and in the rural commune of Tsararano, Betsiboka, concrete actions have been taken to improve the working conditions of fishermen and encourage them to fish offshore. As part of the professionalization of small-scale fishermen, the Government has provided modern equipment to fishermen in Toliara and its surrounding areas. This equipment includes fiberglass pirogues equipped with 300 to 400 kg coolers and 9.9 HP engines, as well as multi-filament nets and longlines suitable for deep-sea fishing. This support aims to encourage fishermen to practice offshore fishing, a more productive and sustainable activity. The Minister of Fisheries and the Blue Economy, Paubert Tsimanaoraty Mahatante, presented this equipment during a ceremony attended by local authorities, fishing associations, and the Vezo communities. This initiative is part of a national strategy to promote professional fishing and responsibly value marine resources.
Fish Farmers
Blue economy promotion actions are taking place across the country. In the Betsiboka region, the focus has been on aquaculture. On January 25, the regional Directorate of Fisheries and the Blue Economy (DRPEB) conducted a field visit to Tsararano, a rural commune in Maevatanana, to support a farmer who decided to venture into fish farming. During this visit, 500 tilapia and carp fry were introduced into a pond on a site with a constant water supply. The technical team provided practical advice to optimize the farming process and encouraged the farmer to expand their facilities. This action highlights the Government’s commitment to developing aquaculture as a key sector to improve food security and rural incomes. While this is just one of the many beneficiaries supported by the Ministry of Fisheries and the Blue Economy (MPEB), it illustrates the broader efforts to strengthen the blue economy by supporting both local fishermen and fish farmers.
Through these initiatives, Madagascar aims to enhance the resilience of coastal and rural communities while preserving its aquatic resources for future generations.
