Polluted seas pose a danger to humans, animals, and nature. A new funding program aims to reduce pollution.

Berlin (d.de) – For better protection of the seas, the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUV) has launched a funding program to combat marine waste. The focus is on ways to prevent plastic waste. The funding covers projects in the areas of sustainable production, circular design and closed-loop solutions, integrated waste management systems, consulting and capacity building exchanges, waste information systems, and societal transformation.
« The oceans are essential to human health. Polluted seas and plastic waste represent a growing threat to the food chain and the vital resources of millions of people, » said Steffi Lemke, the German Minister of the Environment. With this new funding, the BMUV is sending a clear signal for the international protection of seas and waters.
The funding per project can amount to up to six million euros, with a maximum duration of four years.
Through its funding program « Marine Debris Framework – Regional hubs around the globe » (Marine:DeFRAG), the BMUV complements the federal government’s commitment to marine ecosystem protection. Since 2019, 16 projects in 25 countries have been funded with a total of 82 million euros.
