With the ambition of becoming a key hub for green fuels in the Mediterranean and Southern Europe, the Catalan port authorities have just given the green light to a strategic project.
The Port of Barcelona has launched the construction of three new berths for energy products at the Moll de l’Energia. These facilities will be specially designed to handle bulk liquids and the vessels that transport them. The goal: to increase unloading capacity, streamline maritime traffic, and enhance the port’s logistical services. The project also includes the extension of the access channel to connect the unloading arms to the existing industrial infrastructure on the quay.
The administrative approval is only the first step: the Council of Ministers must still approve the call for tenders before the official launch of the construction, which is estimated to cost €124 million. According to forecasts, the works should take just over three years. This initiative is part of a broader transformation led by the new management of the Port of Barcelona.
Automation and Blue Economy
At the same time, the Port Authority has also approved an €11.5 million investment to modernize its terminals. Automated border control systems will be installed in four cruise terminals and in freight areas.
Finally, a 36-year concession has just been granted to the World Trade Center Barcelona (WTCB) to redevelop the old warehouses of the Moll de Sant Bertran. The aim is to create a business hub dedicated to the blue economy and emerging marine-related sectors. Nearly 16,000 square meters will be transformed to host this new economic center, aligned with the port’s sustainable strategy.
