A memorable cruise. On March 26, Lesley Anne Murphy, an American influencer, shared images of the waves encountered in the Drake Passage, between Antarctica and South America. According to USA Today, wave troughs of up to 12 meters were recorded.
Tossed in all directions
The footage is impressive. The bow of the ship crashes into walls of water taller than itself, then soars above the waves before gently falling back into the ocean. Passengers are tossed between the walls, falling, sliding on the floor, and clinging on as best they can.
« I love adrenaline, so I really enjoyed it. I sat there for a long time, phone in hand, filming what was happening right before our eyes, » the influencer told our colleagues.
A challenging passage
The Drake Passage, which the cruise was navigating when these images were captured, is known for its difficult navigation. The ship, named Ocean Explorer, belongs to the company Quark Expeditions. « Quark Expeditions has more than 30 years of experience navigating polar waters with a fleet specially designed for ice navigation and an expert crew, » a company spokesperson told our colleagues. « The ship, crew, and passengers completed their polar journey safely and without incident. »
