Egypt is rising as a major player in the telecommunications industry by becoming the first country in Africa and the Middle East to manufacture submarine cables. Until now, this market was dominated by only five countries: the United States, China, Japan, France, and Norway. This technological breakthrough strengthens the country’s position on the global digital stage.
A State-of-the-Art Factory for Export
With an investment of $500 million, Egypt has inaugurated a submarine cable manufacturing plant in Damietta, covering 500,000 square meters. Equipped with a 180-meter-high tower, it is entirely dedicated to exports. This project creates 2,000 jobs and supports 30% of local industries, contributing to the country’s economic development.
This strategic initiative allows Egypt to reduce its dependency on imports and assert its key role in global digital infrastructure. It is part of the « 2Africa » project, the world’s largest submarine cable network, aiming to enhance connectivity between Africa, Europe, and Asia.
An international expert has praised this advancement, highlighting that beyond its economic impact, it marks a strategic transformation, placing Egypt among the leaders in submarine telecommunications.
