Since its creation, BeMed (Beyond Plastic Med) has been committed to supporting efforts to combat plastic pollution, particularly through its annual call for micro-initiatives.

In 2025, BeMed will support 12 local initiatives aimed at raising awareness and reducing plastic pollution in the Mediterranean region.

To strengthen its support for local stakeholders, BeMed focuses on facilitating dialogue and creating a dynamic network of exchange and cooperation among Mediterranean actors committed to a plastic-free sea.

The 2025 winning micro-initiatives include:

  • Supporting merchants and market vendors in La Ciotat to reduce single-use plastics – Atelier Bleu – CPIE Côte Provençale, France
  • Raising awareness among public authorities about the impact of plastic pollution on the Gračanica River and promoting source reduction and effective waste management – NGO Educational order Mama, Montenegro
  • Making Ibiza and Formentera zero-waste islands by 2030 through collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and action across public institutions, civil society, and the private sector – Coop. Bsplash (Ma), Spain
  • Improving waste management in the Vloja region by implementing source separation and testing plastic-free alternatives for cleaning staff – Green Vision, Albania
  • Promoting source reduction and selective sorting in Dropull Municipality through education, best practices, and community engagement – Dropull Municipality, Albania
  • Publishing and promoting a special classroom edition of the comic magazine “La porte de la mer” to educate children on the sources and consequences of plastic pollution – La maison Couscous Édition, Tunisia
  • Tackling plastic pollution in the Gökova environmental protection area through litter monitoring, awareness campaigns, and regional cooperation for lasting impact – Akdeniz Koruma Derneği (Mediterranean Conservation Society), Turkey
  • Engaging communities in detecting and combating plastic pellet pollution through citizen science and advocating for improved regulations – Good Karma Projects, Spain
  • Raising awareness among students and communities in Librazhd and Prrenias through educational interventions, cultural events, and art-based activities – United Agro-Environmental Association Agri-En, Albania
  • Empowering young leaders to reduce plastic pollution through art-based emotional engagement, capacity-building, and creative campaigns – Empower Hub for Development and Training, Egypt
  • Reducing plastic use in schools on the island by identifying plastic sources, hosting workshops like reading and reusable bag making, and installing a water fountain – Elafonisos Eco, Greece
  • Reducing the environmental impact of plastics in tourist establishments in Sousse and promoting an eco-responsible model – Association Oxygène de Messadine, Tunisia

These projects reflect the diversity and innovation of local solutions contributing to a healthier, plastic-free Mediterranean.
