Seaweeds are not only used in cosmetics 🧼, food 🍰, and pharmaceuticals 💊—they also offer sustainable livelihood opportunities for coastal communities!
From February 24 to March 1, 2025, 7 Malagasy experts and seaweed farmers took part in a knowledge-sharing visit to #Zanzibar 🇹🇿.
✅ Mission accomplished: Strengthening their capacity to develop and promote seaweed farming in Madagascar, where this activity serves as a vital alternative livelihood to fishing for coastal communities.
During the visit, participants had the opportunity to:
✔ Discover new sustainable farming and processing techniques
✔ Visit women-led cooperatives and local sales points
📍 In Zanzibar, 90% of seaweed farmers are women 👩🌾!
This exchange visit, which involved NAAN, Riake Nosy Be, and the Fisheries and Marine Science Institute (IH.SM), was organized through the Experience Exchange Program of the #RECOS project.
