The 2025 Biodiversity Lotto begins this Monday, April 28. On this occasion, the radio program “11/13” welcomes doctor and explorer Jean-Louis Étienne, who emphasizes the urgent need to protect oceans and coastlines.

The Year of the Sea kicked off in 2025. As part of it, the third edition of the Biodiversity Lotto, dedicated to the conservation of oceans and coastal areas, was launched this Monday. For Jean-Louis Étienne, guest on “11/13”, “Anything that helps with education, that encourages people to understand and take action, is a good idea.” He reminds listeners that “the ocean absorbs 93% of excess heat,” pointing out that “anything you heat up expands, and so the ocean rises.”

“The ocean feeds half of humanity”
“All coastlines are exposed to rising sea levels,” continues Étienne, who is especially known for his Arctic expeditions. He stresses that the phenomenon is “already well underway,” and that immediate action is needed—not only on climate, but also on other threats to oceans and seas, such as “pollution and overfishing in areas that are not monitored.”

“The ocean feeds half of humanity, so education is essential,” he concludes.
