For the past ten days, the Maersk Sana has been drifting without propulsion in the Atlantic, approximately 650 kilometers east of the Bermuda Islands. On April 28, while en route from Newark to Singapore, a serious incident struck the Danish Maersk vessel, reports Ouest France. The exact nature of the incident remains unclear, but specialized media outlets like The Maritime Executive mention a fire, or even an explosion, in the engine room.

Three crew members were injured. One was treated onboard, while the other two were transferred to another ship before being evacuated. One has since left the hospital, while the other is continuing treatment in the United States.

« No Immediate Danger »
Deprived of propulsion, the container ship remains operational in some aspects. It retains electricity and can activate its lateral thrusters if needed. With favorable weather conditions, Maersk has stated that the vessel « faces no immediate danger. »

However, its immobilization cannot last indefinitely. A Norwegian tug, specially chosen for this complex mission, is en route and is expected to reach the vessel around May 12. The Maersk Sana will then be towed to a port for repairs, although the destination has yet to be determined.
