The “Elmed” submarine power cable project, which will connect Tunisia to Italy, was the focus of a working meeting held yesterday at the headquarters of the Nabeul governorate. The session addressed the environmental and social impact assessments of this strategic energy exchange project between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
Present at the meeting, Mohamed Ali Fenira, Member of Parliament for the Grombalia constituency and a member of the Energy and Environment Committee in the Assembly of People’s Representatives, told a correspondent from National Radio that the total value of the project is estimated at approximately 3.5 billion Tunisian dinars.
The planned route for the electrical interconnection will start in Grombalia, head toward Kendar in the Sousse governorate, and then connect to Italy via a submarine cable.
The MP highlighted that several other lines are also being planned to strengthen Tunisia’s national electricity transmission network, underlining the strategic importance of the Elmed project for the country’s energy security.
“This project offers a concrete solution to the country’s energy challenges and paves the way for electricity exports to Europe—a major step forward for our energy sovereignty,” said Mohamed Ali Fenira.
It is worth noting that the Elmed project is part of a strengthened partnership between Tunisia and the European Union, supported by international financial institutions. It is also expected to contribute to the energy transition by facilitating the integration of renewable energies into the national grid.
