Maud Fontenoy proposes concrete solutions to protect our “nourishing sea” and thereby preserve our humanity.
Oceans are the cradle of humanity. They cover 70% of our planet and have always played a vital role: their waters harbor 80% of life on Earth and produce at least 50% of the oxygen we breathe. They also feed us: fish are the main source of protein for more than 800 million people!
Yet overfishing (75% of stocks are affected, and only 2.8% of the ocean surface is protected), ocean acidification, and plastic and chemical pollution are threatening our “nourishing sea” at an alarming rate — according to the UN, more than half of marine species could be endangered by 2100.
For Maud Fontenoy, a recognized ocean expert, careful management of this vital resource is a key element for a sustainable future. Each of us has a role to play, especially by accepting to change our eating habits.
Prioritizing seasonal fish, small species, sustainable fishing, diversifying consumption with seaweed and “ugly fish,” or trusting certification labels are all solutions within everyone’s reach — and their impact could be invaluable in the coming decades.
