The Italian government is working “on a maritime industrial strategy to support European shipyards in the face of Asian competition”

The Mediterranean Sea “has returned to the forefront of global dynamics, as the shortest communication route between the West and the East,” said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a video message broadcast during the annual Assembly of Assarmatori, currently taking place in Rome.
“Focusing on the sea — economically, culturally, and socially — is a priority for this government. It is a strategic asset for Italy, stemming from our geographic position,” the Prime Minister added.

The Mediterranean “is crossed by 20% of global maritime traffic; it is the link between the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific. It offers Italy and its businesses opportunities for development, growth, and prosperity,” Meloni continued.

The government “is working with the Interministerial Committee for Maritime Policies on a maritime industrial strategy to help European shipyards compete with Asian ones,” said the Prime Minister.
“A pragmatic approach is necessary to harmonize international, European, and national regulations. The goal is to provide operators with a streamlined regulatory framework, avoiding redundancies that could hinder the competitiveness of our businesses.”

The Piano del Mare (“Sea Plan”) “has already produced many results, but much remains to be done,” Meloni added. “We are working to support the driving role of our port and logistics system. We are also the first European country to have developed a dedicated legal framework for the underwater dimension,” she said.

The government “continues its efforts to make Italy a strategic hub for energy flows between the Middle East, Africa, and Europe,” said the Prime Minister. “We are actively working on several strategic projects, starting with the IMEC corridor, which will connect port cities in India, the Middle East, and Europe,” she concluded.
