On the occasion of the International Day of the Mediterranean, the BlueMissionMed project had the honour of participating in the two-day initiative “Ventotene chiama l’Europa”, organized by L’Abbraccio del Mediterraneo ETS.

The event brought together Mediterranean stakeholders, institutions, and citizens to reflect on the shared future of the region and to renew a collective commitment to cooperation, sustainability, and peace, in line with the five “Ps” of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership.

During the celebrations, the coordinator of BlueMissionMed emphasized the strategic importance of the Mediterranean within the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters”, underlining the essential role of research, innovation, and multi-level cooperation in accelerating the Mission’s implementation across the basin. The Mission’s local engagement approach involves regional authorities, institutions, and communities in a joint effort to protect, restore, and regenerate our sea.

These key messages were also shared in an interview broadcast on Italian national television, where the coordinator illustrated how the Mission provides a concrete framework for translating science into action, enabling systemic change toward a sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient Mediterranean.

The interview highlighted the crucial role of research, innovation, and multi-level collaboration in accelerating the implementation of the Mission across the basin, involving regions, institutions, and stakeholders in the shared effort to protect, restore, and regenerate our sea.

The Mediterranean is not only a biodiversity hotspot, but also a vital socio-economic and cultural crossroads facing growing environmental pressures. The Mission offers a concrete framework to turn science into action and to foster systemic transformation toward a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive future for the region.
