Côte d’Ivoire is actively committing to coastal protection through an ambitious strategy called “Blue Côte d’Ivoire,” aimed at developing a sustainable and inclusive blue economy.
This initiative, carried out in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has a projected budget of $373 million, according to the Government Information and Communication Center (CICG).
The strategy aims to:
- Protect and restore marine and coastal ecosystems,
- Strengthen blue economy governance,
- Improve the resilience of communities living near the coast.
With over 560 kilometers of coastline rich in mangroves, lagoons, and biodiversity, Côte d’Ivoire’s coastal areas are a strategic economic asset. However, they are currently threatened by erosion, pollution, overexploitation of resources, and the effects of climate change.
The UNDP Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, Blerta Cela, emphasized that the development of the blue economy has become an urgent necessity rather than a choice. She also reaffirmed UNDP’s support to mobilize climate financing and foster public-private partnerships around the project.
She called on all national and international stakeholders to rally around this strategy, which is built on collective action.
