The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) region comprises eight member states, including both coastal and landlocked countries, covering an area of approximately 5.2 million square kilometers. IGAD countries—Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda—rely heavily on agriculture and livestock, and many face water stress and vulnerability to climate change.

Aware of the untapped potential of their aquatic and fisheries resources, the region is striving to transition toward more resilient economies by promoting the blue economy.
