Unit 42 Deploys QR Codes to Support Compliance Against IUU Fishing
Unit 42 of the Command of Region 4 of the Coast Guard has deployed a QR code called the Electronic IUU Logbook (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated fishing) in fishing ports, on docks, and aboard vessels, providing fishermen with quick access to regulations and thereby strengthening compliance during activities at sea.
As part of an operation conducted in cooperation with the People’s Committee of U Minh Commune in Cà Mau Province, Unit 42 organized an awareness session aimed at enhancing monitoring and improving understanding of rules related to the fight against IUU fishing.
During the session, officers distributed and placed QR codes in port areas and on fishing vessels. These codes function as an electronic logbook, allowing fishermen to use their phones to immediately access key legal texts, including the Fisheries Resources Law, Vietnam’s Maritime Law, penalties for violations related to IUU fishing, and obligations to follow during sea trips. Digitizing this content facilitates access to information anytime and anywhere, empowering fishermen to comply more effectively with regulations.
Alongside QR code usage, authorities continue to maintain traditional awareness methods, such as information meetings, distribution of leaflets, and legal notebooks, to diversify access channels and ensure fishermen fully understand the applicable rules.
At the end of the session, the team visited vessels docked at the port to meet with owners, captains, and crew members, encouraging strict adherence to IUU fishing regulations.
The combination of digital tools and traditional communication methods is seen as an effective approach, promoting positive changes in sector awareness and practices. This initiative contributes to national efforts to lift the European Commission’s “yellow card” and foster a sustainable fisheries sector.
