Washington continues the official recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. At the end of December 2025, a high-level American diplomatic delegation visited Dakhla, an initiative with heavy political and strategic consequences.
Consulate in Dakhla: An American delegation paves the way
This visit marks a turning point in the American position: from a simple political recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over its southern provinces, the United States is now concretely committed to the establishment of a permanent consulate in the city. This is not a simple protocol visit, but a significant step in the clearly defined strategy that Washington has been pursuing since the official recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
The recent actions of the United States testify to a constant desire to establish a direct diplomatic presence in the heart of the southern provinces, thus giving this recognition an institutional and practical dimension that goes beyond simple political symbolism.
Available data reveal that the city of Dakhla occupies an increasingly important place in American geopolitical calculations. It is indeed considered a stable Moroccan area, benefiting from solid institutional security and administrative stability, as well as rapid development that makes it an increasingly attractive destination for international investment and a strategic gateway to the interior of Africa.
During its visit, the American delegation held in-depth meetings with the governor of the Dakhla-Oued region Ed-Dahab and several elected officials and local authorities.
Technical and logistical aspects
These meetings focused on the technical and logistical aspects related to the choice and implementation of the consulate’s site, as well as the assessment of the potential of the region and its existing infrastructure. This interaction is, in itself, a concrete recognition of the effectiveness of Moroccan institutions and the level of stability enjoyed by the southern provinces.
The initiative is part of the continued American support for the new development model promoted by Morocco in its Sahara. Washington counts on Dakhla as a regional platform for investment and economic exchange, especially in the fields of renewable energy, the blue economy and logistics infrastructure.
Involvement of high American institutions
This trend is reinforced by the involvement of leading American institutions, such as the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and the Prosper Africa Initiative, in strategic projects in the region. The political message is clear and unequivocal. With this initiative, the United States affirms its commitment to establish a permanent diplomatic presence on the sovereign territory of Morocco, in full compliance with international law and the sovereign choices of the Kingdom. This visit is perceived as a new diplomatic success for Morocco in the defense of its primordial national cause, and as a strong message addressed to the international community: the Moroccan Sahara is no longer a subject of theoretical debate, but a tangible reality concretized by actions and practical measures, thus strengthening Morocco’s position as a reliable strategic partner at the regional and international levels.
