The people of Greenland “can count on us,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Wednesday, just hours before a high-tension meeting between Danish and American officials regarding this autonomous territory.

“It is important that Greenlanders know — through actions, not just words — that we respect their aspirations and interests, and that they can count on us,” the European executive chief emphasized during a press conference in Brussels. She added: “Greenland belongs to its inhabitants.”

Macron Issues a Warning

A violation of Greenland’s sovereignty would have “cascading consequences” that “would be unprecedented,” French President Emmanuel Macron warned Wednesday during a Council of Ministers session, addressing the United States, which seeks to take control of this autonomous Danish territory.

“We do not underestimate the statements regarding Greenland. If the sovereignty of a European allied country were affected, the cascading consequences would be unprecedented. France is closely monitoring the situation and will act in full solidarity with Denmark and its sovereignty,” Macron said, according to remarks reported to the press by government spokesperson Maud Bregeon.

The United States Has a “Vital” Need for Greenland for Its Missile Shield Project, Says Trump

The United States “needs Greenland for national security reasons. It is vital for the Dome of Gold (the missile shield project) that we are building,” President Donald Trump stated Wednesday on his Truth Social platform.

“NATO should pave the way for us to obtain it,” the American president insisted.

“IF WE DO NOT DO IT, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN!” Trump declared.

“Militarily, without the considerable power of the United States (…), NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent, far from it!” Trump argued.

“NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES. Any other scenario is unacceptable,” he concluded.

Since returning to power nearly a year ago, the American president has regularly mentioned the possibility of taking control of this vast Arctic island, a strategic but sparsely populated autonomous Danish territory.
