More than one-third of global fish stocks are overfished (35.5 %). That means fish are being caught faster than they can be replenished, a reality that threatens ocean ecosystems, food security and the fishing communities that depend on them for livelihoods.
Without transparency, it’s hard to know where, when and how much fishing is happening. This, in turn, makes sustainable management and accountability difficult. At Global Fishing Watch, we use satellite data, machine learning and open tools to make fishing activity visible to anyone, anywhere, helping governments, scientists and civil society make better decisions for healthier oceans.
