Last January, the National Center for Scientific Research published an article on « French research in Overseas », an opportunity for Laurent Chauvaud to look back on ten years of research on marine ecosystems and biodiversity conducted in the waters of the archipelago.
In a January file devoted to French overseas research, the CNRS returns to the « Shells, the ocean sentinels » but does not mention the other work carried out in the archipelago for almost ten years. Work on marine ecosystems, local biodiversity.
Since the very first scientific studies launched in 2017, projects have multiplied to observe the thermal oscillation of the waters of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. Other studies also focus on the marine ecosystem, underwater habitats and the creation of precise mapping of the archipelago’s seabed.
In 2019, the scallops of Miquelon were the subject of a thesis signed by Pierre Poidevin. Bivalves that are valuable indicators to trace several centuries of environmental changes.
The acoustic landscape is also important. Two theses were conducted on the impact of noise on marine ecosystems in Miquelon and Saint-Pierre and they reveal, for example, the behavior of « cuckoos« . Laurent Chauvaud says that these small shells « do 50 kilometers a year, that noise changes the diet of these critters, their behavior« .
Laurent Chauvaud answers questions from Aldric Lahiton and Jérôme Anger.
Rich biodiversity, unique ecosystems at the heart of the attention of researchers who encourage us to hope for a complete and detailed publication on the ten years of research conducted in the archipelago.
