A delegation of Algerian experts has completed a study mission in Tunisia devoted to sustainable fisheries management and maritime surveillance systems. This initiative is part of a regional program supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to preserve fisheries resources in the Mediterranean.
A high-level Algerian delegation, composed of 14 experts, completed a study mission in Tunisia focused on national experience in the sustainable management of sea fishing and control mechanisms at sea. This visit is part of a regional cooperation program funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The initiative reflects a shared vision between Tunis and Algiers, technically and financially supported by Japan, to face the environmental and economic challenges affecting the Mediterranean basin and guarantee a rational and sustainable exploitation of marine resources.
Stopover at the port of La Goulette and focus on » Hannibal » ships
The mission ended with a field visit to the port of La Goulette. Algerian experts were able to discover the characteristics and equipment of the surveillance ships » Hannibal 3″ and » Hannibal 4″.
Acquired as part of a Japanese donation, these buildings constitute a pillar of the Tunisian strategy to combat illegal and anarchic fishing, and to protect fishery resources in territorial waters.
The visit took place in the presence of Mayumi Miyata, resident representative of JICA in Tunisia, Ali Cheikh Sbai, Director General of Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Ministry of Agriculture, and Japanese expert Nanao Hitonori.
Technical exchanges
According to the JICA, the program of the Algerian delegation included several technical meetings with the Directorate-General for Fisheries and Aquaculture and the regional agricultural development commissariats. The national policies of the sector were presented in detail.
Technical presentations also focused on participatory management, artificial reef techniques, and the satellite ship surveillance system.
A maritime tour also led the delegation to several coastal regions, including Tunis, Sfax, Gabès (Ghannouch) and Médenine (Zarzis and Hassi Jerbi), with field meetings with fishermen, sector professionals and recovery and processing units.
