Based in the United Kingdom, the company Resting Reef offers an alternative to the usual urns that hold the ashes of pets. This is an environmentally friendly and sustainable initiative that also contributes to the formation of coral reefs.

Reclaiming the ashes of deceased animals

When pets die, many owners choose to keep their ashes in a pet urn . While pet funerals are currently booming, a British company has recently launched an eco-friendly alternative to traditional urns. Called Resting Reef, it proposes to repurpose pet ashes as part of a marine ecosystem restoration project .

The people behind this initiative want to save coral reefs , but also oyster reefs. To do this, they propose mixing ashes with crushed seashells to create urns to be placed underwater. This will restore biodiversity by revitalizing reefs that have suffered erosion or degradation. More specifically, the ashes will be mixed with the shells to form structures reminiscent of the natural growth patterns of ancient stromatolite reefs, thus promoting the growth of corals and algae.

Several obstacles in this project

The Resting Reef project has a first phase scheduled for March 2026. Officials will install approximately twenty urns in Tianyar Bay, near the village of Tulamben in northern Bali, Indonesia. This type of underwater cemetery will help restore the coral reef, which is threatened by disappearance, primarily due to overfishing . It’s worth noting that the urns are designed using biomimicry to provide new shelter, breeding grounds, and a food source for marine life.

While the startup’s project seems well-intentioned, there’s a psychological barrier for pet owners to overcome. They may not always be ready to part with their pet’s ashes. To help ease the decision, Resting Reef will offer, in exchange for the ashes, a personalized plaque, a miniature memorial reef containing a small portion of the ashes, and GPS coordinates to locate the urn . Finally, another significant obstacle is the price: €2,250.
