The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) strongly denounced on Tuesday the environmental degradation at the level of the Errahma landfill, located in the delegation of Menzel Bouzelfa (Governorate of Nabeul), warning of the resulting environmental and health repercussions.

The Forum’s press release, which follows a field visit to the landfill carried out on April 16, 2026 by the Minister of the Environment, specified that this landfill, which receives more than 500 tons of waste daily from 14 delegations, has far exceeded its reception capacity and technical life.

In addition, the cessation of activity of the landfill treatment plant led to massive leaks of leachate (liquid from waste degradation). These toxic substances submerge the surrounding agricultural land and pour into the Uadi Chiba, whose water is used by local farmers for irrigation of vegetable crops. In addition to water pollution, residents suffer from foul odors and the proliferation of stray dogs, representing a major health hazard, has further criticized the forum.

According to the Forum, « despite the observation of the infractions by the minister and the representatives of the National Waste Management Agency (ANGED), the official responses were limited to « promises », without a specific schedule or clear funding ».

In addition, ANGED, which, according to the FTDES, expressed the difficulty of mobilizing the necessary funds for the rehabilitation of the site and the creation of a new treatment unit, is continuing the extension of the landfill in the immediate vicinity of the main road.

Faced with this observation, the FTDES blamed these shortcomings on the company SEGOR, which operates the landfill under a contract signed with ANGED, as well as the latter, which is responsible for managing landfills in the country.

The Forum also denounced the persistent criminalization of the environmental movement and the legal proceedings against activists in the Errahma region and reiterated its commitment to continue to provide them with the necessary support and to all those who claim their right to a healthy environment.
