When we think about Portugal’s major economic opportunities, we usually talk about tourism, real estate, renewable energy, technology, or data centers. However, one of the areas with the greatest potential for the next decade often remains outside most people’s field of vision: the maritime economy.
That’s why I was struck by the news of the selection of 18 international startups for the HUB Azul accelerator program . At first glance, it might seem like just another business accelerator program. In reality, it represents something much more significant. It represents Portugal’s ability to attract international innovation to develop ocean-related projects, creating knowledge, investment, and skilled jobs within our borders.
The selected companies come from countries such as the United States, Japan, Finland, France, and the United Kingdom. They work in fields as diverse as sustainable aquaculture, blue biotechnology, marine biodiversity monitoring, autonomous navigation, fishing gear recycling, and intelligent ocean data management. Some of these startups are already valued at tens or even hundreds of millions of euros, demonstrating the growing economic importance of this sector on a global scale.
The most interesting aspect is that these companies aren’t just coming to present ideas. They’re coming to develop pilot projects, create partnerships, and test Portuguese solutions. This shows that the country is beginning to be seen as a credible place to innovate in a field where it possesses natural advantages that are difficult to replicate. We benefit from a privileged location on the Atlantic, one of the largest exclusive economic zones in Europe, universities conducting high-quality research, and a historical connection to the sea that can now be transformed into a modern economic advantage.
In recent years, we have seen an influx of investments related to artificial intelligence, energy, and data centers. The blue economy could be the next big opportunity. In a world increasingly concerned with sustainability, food security, the preservation of natural resources, and environmental monitoring, ocean-related solutions will gain strategic importance.
HUB Azul’s strength lies precisely in building bridges between investors, startups, universities, businesses, and public entities. It is this type of ecosystem that transforms knowledge into business and business into economic growth. We often talk about the need to diversify the Portuguese economy and create more skilled jobs. Projects like this one contribute precisely to this goal.
For perhaps too long, we have considered the sea solely as an element of our history. Today, we have the opportunity to make it a key element of our future. And when we see innovative companies from several continents choosing Portugal to develop their solutions, we realize that this transformation has already begun.
