Today, the European Union is launching the Trans-Mediterranean Cooperation Initiative for Renewable Energy and Clean Technologies.(T-MED), a flagship initiative within the framework of the Pact for the MediterraneanT-MED aims to accelerate the development of renewable energy, hydrogen, clean technology manufacturing and modernized electricity grids throughout the Mediterranean region, thereby contributing to a more integrated, sustainable and interconnected Mediterranean energy market.
Presented during European Sustainable Energy Week by the Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica , and the Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen , the T-MED initiative aims to mobilize up to €25 billion in expected investments by 2035. The European Commission is making over €5 billion in guarantee capacity available under the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus.(FEDD+). This guarantee capacity will help unlock public and private investments in the sectors covered by T-MED.
At the heart of T-MED, the objective is to strengthen energy cooperation across the Mediterranean. By 2035, the initiative is expected to contribute to the development of 15 gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity, support regulatory reforms in partner countries, and enable the creation of more than 100,000 jobs in the clean energy sector.
