The President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, opened this Monday, the Forum on the sustainable development of maritime transport and logistics in the blue economy. The Head of State has set the goal of transforming Senegal, which has 750 kilometers of coastline and a vast river network, into a major maritime player and no longer into a « simple crossing point on the Atlantic front of West Africa ». Noting that the maritime economy weighs only a fraction of the national wealth, he said that this situation is « the measure of what we leave untapped ».

The presidential action plan is based on the construction of the deep-water port of Ndayane to accommodate the largest containers in the world, the creation of logistics corridors to unlock the populations and the development of a major school of sea trades that will become a dedicated university. The project also includes the modernization of fishing ports because, according to the president, « a maritime policy that would forget artisanal fishing would not be one ». The ambition displayed is to strengthen national sovereignty by controlling maritime spaces, the Head of State having concluded his intervention with these words: « The sea never forgets those who respect it. «
