At the end of a meeting held on Wednesday between the Governor of Médenine, Walid Taboubi, and the Director General of the National Waste Management Agency (ANGed), Badreddine Lamar, an agreement was reached for the start, in early October, of the experimental phase of the pilot unit for biological recovery of waste in Dierba, once the installation of the equipment was completed.
The result of 100% Tunisian expertise, this project is carried out as part of a partnership between the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME) and ANGed, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The facility will treat nearly 6,000 tons of organic waste per year. It will thus avoid the emission of 5,600 tons of carbon dioxide, while producing about 1,600 MWh of electricity and nearly 3,900 tons of organic compost.
This new unit is a strategic milestone in Tunisia’s energy transition efforts. It is part of a global participatory approach focused on the energy recovery of organic waste, in perfect coherence with the national vision aimed at stimulating the circular economy and strengthening the country’s energy independence.
