
On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, the Minister of Environment, Habib Abid, chaired a working session in one of Djerba’s tourist facilities, which brought together the Secretary of State for the Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, responsible for energy transition, Wael Chouchane, representatives from the National Waste Management Agency, the National Energy Agency, and members of the local civil society.
During the session, a waste valorization project in Djerba was presented. The Minister of Environment emphasized the importance of extracting energy from waste, stating that « waste in Tunisia could supply 30% of the country’s energy needs. »
He added that « the waste management project in Djerba will allow the extraction of green gas, which will be used by tourist units and residences, in collaboration with the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company. »
Regarding the site for the implementation of this project, the minister mentioned that the land had been identified in cooperation with Djerba’s civil society, noting that « the project will be carried out at the municipal landfill. »
The total cost of the project is estimated at over 4 million dinars, according to the minister, who also mentioned that these costs would be covered by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
At the end of the working session, the minister visited a model composting center for waste, located in a hotel in Djerba.
