In recent years, biomimicry has attracted the interest of a growing number of companies wishing to develop new processes and products that are at the same time innovative, ecological and efficient. According to figures from the Da Vinci Index published on the Bioexigy website, the number of patents linked to inventions inspired by nature increased by 740%, between the years 2000 and 2019. Currently, biomimetics allows to develop new technologies in all sectors of activity. In the field of maritime transport and recreational boating, it is used, among other things, to develop innovative thrusters, like that of ADV Propulse. This Bordeaux company has invented a propulsion system inspired by the movements of fish tails, more efficient than conventional propellers.
A propeller that consumes less energy than conventional propellers
ADV Propulse defines its propulsion system as a disruptive innovation. The thruster is composed of a rotor with a vertical axis, equipped with three blades. The incidence of the latter can be adjusted dynamically, depending on the fluid passed through. In other words, during their rotation, they are able to follow specific and optimized movements. Thanks to its innovative operation, the thruster benefits from 10 to 15% greater energy efficiency than conventional propellers. According to the Bordeaux company, this invention constitutes a major technological advance in the field of propulsion and offers new perspectives in terms of energy performance.

Optimal comfort and excellent handling
Aside from energy efficiency, the propulsion system designed by ADV Propulse provides optimal comfort for the occupants of a boat. In fact, the low rotation speed of the rotor and blades reduces vibrations, as well as noise pollution which can negatively affect passengers and wildlife, particularly marine mammals. Furthermore, still thanks to its operation, but also to its 360° orientation, the thruster greatly improves the maneuverability of the boats, explains the company. To highlight the maneuverability qualities offered by this innovative propulsion system, Arnaud Curutchet, the founder of the Bordeaux company, declared during the 2023 edition of the Grand Pavois La Rochelle that: “The boats make circles on the ‘water […] we make squares’. “In the greatest secrecy, an innovative propellant is being prepared in the ADV Propulse workshops…”, indicates Olivier Genitoni, General Manager & Sales Department of ADV PROPULSE.
