From April 24 to 26, 2025, Casablanca hosted the Crans Montana Forum, where global leaders gathered to address maritime security as a cornerstone of international trade and coastal development in Africa.

Urgent Global Cooperation for Safer Seas

One of the forum’s central themes was the need for urgent international cooperation. Participants emphasized that only through united efforts can piracy, terrorism, and organized crime—major threats to maritime trade and regional stability—be effectively countered.

Secured Ports, Boosted Trade

The importance of securing ports and maritime routes was also highlighted. Calls were made for modernization, digitalization, and customs harmonization as essential steps to enhance intra-African trade and improve port competitiveness across the continent.

Challenges and Opportunities for Africa’s Maritime Industry

The discussions also delved into the digital transformation and innovation challenges facing Africa’s maritime industry. Preserving coastal resources was identified as a priority to ensure sustainable economic growth.

Dakhla: A Strategic Hub for West Africa

The port of Dakhla was showcased as a key growth driver for West Africa. Its strategic location and ongoing expansion position it as a vital transatlantic logistics hub, capable of facilitating regional integration and global connectivity.

Toward a Sustainable Blue Economy

A sustainable blue economy was another focal point, with emphasis on green shipping, responsible aquaculture, and marine renewable energy. Speakers stressed the need to balance economic development with environmental protection.

AES at the Heart of West Africa’s Future

In parallel, Malian Minister Diop joined a panel on the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), highlighting its formation, constructive stance toward ECOWAS, and expectations from the African Union. A new paradigm of international cooperation in the region was discussed.

The Crans Montana Forum underscored maritime security as a key driver of Africa’s trade and featured strategic discussions on regional integration through the AES.
