Addis Ababa, July 23, 2024 (ENA): – The African Union Commission, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and key stakeholders, launched African Blue Economy Week (ABEW-24) and the Commemoration of African Seas and Oceans Day today in Addis Ababa.

The event aims to stimulate inclusive and sustainable blue growth across Africa.

Africa’s abundant marine resources offer exceptional opportunities for transformative economic and social development.

This year’s theme, “Empowering Africa’s Blue Renaissance”, highlights the need for collective effort and innovation to build a dynamic blue sector.

African Blue Economy Week (ABEW-24) brings together leaders from diverse sectors to foster dialogue, celebrate achievements and explore the role of the blue economy in promoting development goals such as poverty reduction and climate resilience.

African Seas and Oceans Day, celebrated each year on July 25, is a highlight of ABEW-24, according to the UNDP.

The day highlights the enormous value of Africa’s aquatic resources and the need for sustainable management to support economic growth, food security and environmental health.

The celebration aligns with Africa’s Decade of Seas and Oceans (2015-2025), highlighting efforts to protect and use these resources.
