The United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) in Nice will be introduced by three summits presented at the closing of the Sea Economy Summit in Bordeaux, by François Houllier, President of Ifremer, and Ashok Adicéam, responsible at the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs for the preparation of the event.
The Closing of the Sea Economy Summit Paves the Way for the Ocean Decade Event in Nice in June
The closing of the Sea Economy Summit gave way, on Wednesday, November 20, to the upcoming Ocean Decade event in June in Nice. « I think this only happens once in a lifetime—to have a United Nations Ocean Summit in France, » added Romain Troublé, CEO of the Tara Ocean Foundation, who will present the Tara Ocean schooner to the people of Nice on this occasion.
The ship, with its numerous scientific expeditions, has contributed to collecting data on marine microbiomes and reported on the pressures faced by the ocean, particularly chemical ones. « I am very worried, especially for the fishermen, who are at the forefront of witnessing the consequences on resources, » noted Romain Troublé.
The teams of Jacques Rougerie are also attempting to understand these consequences. With the Sea Orbiter, which he will present at UNOC (a planned underwater station project for 2028), the visionary ocean architect aims to immerse himself long-term to understand the environment as we can on land. « Long-term observation, under pressure, opens up perspectives that you can’t get from short exploration missions. »
Three Key Events to Prepare for UNOC
To understand these issues, the scientific community has its own gathering ahead of the summit, from June 4 to 6, with the One Ocean Science Congress, organized by CNRS and Ifremer, which aims to lay the scientific foundations for UNOC.
Governance and finance, through the Ocean Rise and Resilience Coalition and the Blue Economy and Finance Forum (BEFF), will also have their introduction at the United Nations event, to which all stakeholders are invited, confirmed Olivier Poivre d’Arvor, Special Envoy of the French President for UNOC and Ambassador for the Poles and the Ocean.
The first, the Ocean Rise and Resilience Coalition, is already supported by 36 countries facing sea-level rise. It aims to increase knowledge sharing and cooperation between local authorities, on June 7 in Nice.
The second event will take place in Monaco on June 7-8. Focused on economic actors, the BEFF hopes to ultimately see 100 billion in public, private, and mixed investments in port infrastructure and territorial development, announced Ashok Adicéam, who is responsible for UNOC preparation at the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, to Olivier Poivre d’Arvor. « We are launching the BEFF to increase commitments in the transition and share data. »
These ambitious and cross-cutting goals will provide recommendations and solid foundations for the United Nations Congress, which will take place from June 9 to 13.
