The ministers participating in the study day on « the decarbonization of maritime transport », organized yesterday in Algiers, stressed the particular importance given by Algeria to ecological standards of maritime transport activity, and to the reduction of the carbon footprint of the sector, as part of its global approach to energy transition and consecration of the principles of sustainable development.
This meeting was organized by the Serport group, in the presence of the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, the Minister of Finance, Abdelkrim Bouzred, the Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kaouter Krikou, and the Director General of Customs, Major General Abdelhafid Bakhouche.
The intervening ministers highlighted the role of maritime transport and port activities as essential pillars of the national logistics system, supply chains, and foreign trade, in addition to the importance of joint action and coordination between the various actors for the implementation of integrated solutions to achieve the objectives of the energy transition.
In this wake, the Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, mentioned the importance of decarbonization, especially in the maritime transport sector and port activities, citing the challenges facing the sector to be in tune with the measures approved by the international community on environmental preservation.
The organization of this study day is part of the State’s efforts to promote the maritime transport sector and to develop ports according to a global approach based on the principles of sustainability and environmental protection, according to the minister, who stressed that the choice of this theme reflects a collective awareness of the magnitude of growing environmental challenges and the imperative need to adopt new development approaches based on the reduction of carbon emissions and the achievement of a balance between the requirements of economic development.
He also insisted on the need to reduce the carbon footprint of maritime transport, which is one of the priorities in Algeria, through the modernization of port infrastructure and the use of alternative fuels to improve energy efficiency, in particular in the context of international regulations and standards.
For his part, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, indicated that his sector attaches great importance to supporting the energy transition process, through the realization of the guidelines of the President of the Republic aimed at accelerating the pace, recalling the achievements made in the field of renewable energy, the promotion of energy efficiency and the development of clean solutions, in addition to the launch of important projects in the field of green hydrogen.
Mr. Adjal also reaffirmed his sector’s commitment to support the Serport group with technical and institutional support and to contribute to studies relating to the connection of port docks to the electricity grid, in addition to the continuation of joint work with the Ministry of the Interior, Local Authorities and Transport and all the partners concerned as part of the energy transition approach.
