The Coastal Protection and Planning Agency (APAL) launched on Friday an educational animation entitled « Towards the management and creation of Marine and Coastal Protected Areas in Tunisia », aimed at raising awareness among the general public, especially young people, of the preservation of the country’s marine and coastal ecosystems.
Made as part of the project « Promotion of the ecosystem management of fisheries and other uses of the marine environment », this video, broadcast by APAL on its social networks, benefits from the financial support of the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the French Fund for the World Environment (FFEM),
2,300 kilometers long, the Tunisian coast is home to exceptional marine ecosystems, among the richest and most fragile in the Mediterranean. The animation highlights the vital role of Marine and Coastal Protected Areas (MACP) as sanctuaries of biodiversity, guarantors of ecological balance, survival of endangered species and resilience to the effects of climate change. It also recalls the multiple pressures on these environments: artificialization of coasts, overfishing, pollution and climate change.
Faced with these challenges, APAL is deploying an integrated strategy based on a solid legal framework, including Law No. 49 of 2009 and the 2014 decrees, as well as on local and international partnerships. Concrete actions are carried out, including: rigorous scientific monitoring of posidonia herba and fish stocks, participatory development of management plans with coastal communities, educational activities in environmental clubs and the conclusion of agreements with various maritime actors. These efforts are already bearing fruit, with observable regeneration of natural habitats, the multiplication of species and better resistance of ecosystems to environmental disturbances.
The video concludes with a call for collective mobilization, summarized by the slogan « Let’s protect the coast, protect our future », inviting each citizen to commit to the protection of this common heritage, essential for both the environment, the economy and future generations.
